Last Sunday Enniskillen’s U18 Girls side faced a tough Monaghan side in the Semi Final of the girls youth cup at a blustery Mullaghmeen. From the outset the Skins girls realised this was not going to be a comfortable victory and in the first ten minutes Monaghan carried strongly at the Skins line and made good progress, but for some good cover tackles from the home side’s back three of Emma Shaw, Zoë Donaldson and Mia Jayne Elliott.
The Mullaghmeen breeze was on the home side’s backs in the first half, and Kathryn Dane used this to her advantage, pinning Monaghan in their own half with some great kicks. With one such lineout Abbie Parkinson put the pressure on, forcing scrappy ball, and when Enniskillen’s line speed proved too much for the Monaghan backs Kathryn Dane pounced on a loose ball and danced around half the Monaghan side to score a great opening try.
This seemed to reinvigorate the Fermanagh girls who started taking it to the Monaghan defence. Alison Glass, Alice Hurst and Claire and Katie Boles led by example, tormenting the visitors defenders and setting up good clean ball for the backs. Skins then managed to turn slow ball, into devastating fast ball and then a score when Abbie Parkinson carried hard and off loaded to the on-rushing Alice Hurst, who did the exact same thing to get the ball away to Hollie Bruce, who timed her pass to Rebecca Pennell perfectly. Pennell then raced into the corner for Skins’ second score.
Skins reacted well to scoring again, with further big carries from Sophie Magwood and Rachel West which pushed skins deep into Monaghan territory. It was then Claire Boles who took the ball and made two huge consecutive fends, and rounded the defence to score in the corner.
When the second half started the wind had picked up and was going against Skins in every sense. This did not however, diminish the home side’s spirit, when for the majority of the half, Monaghan had the ball and were attacking the Skins line, the home side refused to concede. Niamh Toolan made several important hits close to the line, Emma Shaw seemed to be covering every possible space on the pitch, as well as putting in several huge hits and Ellie Ingram orchestrated the defensive line from the first minute to the last not once stopping to rest her vocal chords!
Skins held on to progress to the final without conceding a single point in either the Quarter or Semi Final, and will hope they can do the same in the final which is this coming Sunday.
