Minor league West
Ballyshannon 1st XV 15
Enniskillen 3rd XV 17
Enniskillen's 3rd XV started their league campaign with the short journey over the Donegal border to face the recently reformed Ballyshannon men’s side. After a frantic opening to the game Enniskillen found themselves on the back foot and, after several arguable misinterpretations of rules from the referee, found themselves 15 points down. Finally the visiting pack got on top and Maguire kicked Skins into the Ballyshannon half and, as the end of the half approached, senior players like Wilkinson, McGarry and Duncan started to assert their knowhow and Skins were rewarded with 2 tries of their own just before the break, courtesy of Wilkinson and McGarry, one of which was converted by Kelly.
Skins knew they had to improve on the challenging artificial surface. The second period of the game was also a scrappy affair but the Skins men dug deep and wore down their opponents gradually. Hard and direct play from Henderson and Cadden seen Skins make ground with no reward despite Gibson’s disruptive work at the breakdown. Several times 50/50 decisions went against Skins when perhaps another day it would have been in their favour, but the team showed their steel and ruthless edge when, as the referee signalled final play with a Ballyshannon scrum, the front row of Baker, Fee and Breen took a ball against the head. Then after a few hard phases, Duncan took a pop ball off the side of the breakdown and burst through 2 tackles before making the line with another 2 would be tacklers on his back. The conversion was missed but as the final whistle went it was a relief for the Enniskillen men who took the victory knowing they can do better. All at Enniskillen RFC would like to wish Michael Cadden and Rea Armstrong a speedy recovery on their nasty injuries sustained during the contest.
